With ingenious clarity and rare intuitive graphic based layouts the whole of human urban statistics can begin to be digested. On two page spreads over the last third of the book are world maps consisting primarily of variously sized orange dots representing the degrees to which a given city compares to others in each category. Hij heeft namelijk een Metropolitan World Atlas gemaakt, die voor het grootste deel uit kaarten van 101 stedelijke regio’s bestaat. Dat lijkt simpel. Maar Van Susteren presenteert ze allemaal op dezelfde schaal, allemaal met dezelfde legenda en allemaal met vergelijkbare statistische gegevens ernaast, die en als tekst en als helder figuur worden aangeboden. En juist hierin is het boek uniek. De gebruiker kan zelf kiezen welke van de 101 steden hij of zij wil vergelijken, wat voor thema’s daarbij horen of hoe de stadsvorm in elkaar zit. Basisgegevens en basiskaarten van zoveel steden bij elkaar, op zulke handzame wijze bovendien, dat is nog nooit vertoond. Dit wordt een standaardwerk. Tot slot nog een compliment voor de vormgeving: die is strak, helder en door het opnemen van twee leeslinten bijzonder gebruiksvriendelijk. Wie met een onmogelijke vraag zit, bijvoorbeeld “wat is het verschil in aandeel openbaar vervoer tussen de Randstad en Madrid”, hoeft niet lang meer na te denken.
